Dems Blocks Bill Banning Illegal Aliens from Illegally Acquiring Child Tax Credits

Via the Blaze:

Senate Democrats blocked Republicans on Thursday from passing two bills that would require companies to verify the legal status of people before they hire them, and stop the government from handing out child tax credits to illegal immigrants.

Sessions tried to get approval for the two bills after saying illegal immigration is swamping the U.S., which is leading to reduce wages for Americans and higher costs as these immigrants start improperly receiving federal tax benefits.

He first tried to pass the Accountability Through Electronic Verification Act, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa.) That bill would require companies to verify whether possible employees are legally able to work in the country.

But Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) argued that this e-verify provision was in the Senate’s broad immigration bill that passed a year ago, and said Democrats aren’t looking to negotiate passage of sections of that bill.

“We are not going to take that bill apart piece by piece, as the senator from Alabama suggests,” Durbin said. “I object.”

Sessions said if the e-verify program can be accepted by Democrats in the larger bill, they should be able to approve it quickly this week.

“[I]f it’s so good, why don’t we bring it up and pass it now?” Sessions asked. “Why do we have to pass along with it a bill that will double the number of guest workers in the country, and would increase immigration?”

Sessions then tried to pass the Child Tax Credit Integrity Preservation Act, which would change the law to ensure illegal immigrants cannot receive child tax credit benefits. But Durbin objected again, and seemed to indicate he believes these benefits should flow to non-citizens.

“I want to make sure that working families with small children have the helping hand of our tax code,” he said. “I want to stop any fraud in any program in our tax code, but I don’t believe this bill is a balanced approach to solving the problem, and I object.”

That left a stunned Sessions to note that the Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General has said $4.2 billion in child tax credits were given to illegal immigrants.

“I am flabbergasted, amazed that we would sit by and $4 billion in child tax credit payments to go out that are not justified,” he said.

90% of Illegal Aliens Skip Court Appearances

Via the Washington Examiner:

Ninety percent of the mostly-teen illegal immigrants flooding over the Mexico-U.S. border won’t show up for their immigration court hearing, meaning at least 135,000 of the youths will simply vanish into the country this year alone, according to a key House committee chairman.

House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who on Wednesday held a hearing to raise national security concerns about the new wave of illegals, revealed Thursday that many of the teens are placed with relatives, including parents who are in the U.S. illegally, and then ignore court orders to appear for immigration hearings.

Once they are picked up by immigration officials, “they are given a court date, expected to return, a year or more later,” said the Virginia lawmaker. “The overwhelming majority of them, more than 90 percent, do not return for their hearings and as a result we have a problem,” he added.

Goodlatte estimated that 150,000 of the youths will cross the border this year, 10 times last year’s number, and virtually all are claiming to be crime victims in their home countries. He spoke with reporters at a media breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

The congressman will join several others next week in a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border to size up the situation. But he said that the president must begin enforcing the border and institute a zero tolerance on illegal immigration. “They should be required to leave,” he said.

Several Republicans have charged that President Obama is ignoring laws on the books that require tighter control of the border. As a result, said Goodlatte, illegals think they have the green light to enter the United States.

“It’s causing even more illegal immigration to occur,” he said.

“Many of them show right up at the border stations and say, ‘Here I am, let me into the country,’ ” said Goodlatte. “Others who are apprehended crossing the border imediately pull out of their pocket what to say,” he added.

Irony: Rabid Anti-Gun Leftist Wants Government to Kill Gun-Rights Advocates

Via Guns Save Lives:

Here is an excerpt from a column by Susie Madrak over at CrooksandLiars.com,

But Perlstein doesn’t mention the big honkin’ elephant in the room: Namely, at what point does the federal government literally go to war with its own citizens? Because we’re not talking about bank robbers here, we’re talking about (mostly) non-criminal cranks — scofflaws and political malcontents. So what line has to be crossed in the good old U.S. of A. before we start mowing them down to make our point? Because you can’t talk about the Bundy ranch without talking about Ruby Ridge, and Waco.

So here’s the political corner into which we’ve painted ourselves.

Do we have the ATF and BLM agents roll up in armored tanks? Do we use drone strikes? I can see the administration’s reluctance to have that confrontation — after all, it’s not as if gun control advocates were flooding the White House switchboard, screaming to ‘take them out!’ And then we do have the militia types all over the country, just waiting for an excuse to start their own local uprising. These assholes want a civil war so bad, they can taste it.

Um, first off, what the hell is a “gun nut” exactly? Is someone who agrees with you on all of your other political issues but happens to have a collection of 10+ firearms a “gun nut”? Is the Libertarian who owns a handgun for self defense a “gun nut”? Is it only people who disagree with your other political stances?

Second, most gun owners are not sitting around waiting for the second civil war. Most gun owners are people you interact with every single day and you never have any idea that they have a gun safe at home and enjoy going to the shooting range on the weekend. Most gun owners are just like you, we want to provide for our families, enjoy life and work hard. Guns just happen to be an interest for us as well as a tool.

It’s extremely ironic that those who hate guns the most apparently want nothing more than the government to use guns to advance their political ideology. Scary stuff really.

Madrak seems to be talking in general terms about the incident at the Bundy Ranch. She also mentions drone strikes. I guess Madrak doesn’t realize there were counter protestors at the Bundy Ranch as well as people who were protesting for reasons very different from gun rights that probably didn’t have anything to do with the armed protestors. I guess they would just be collateral damage for Madrak.

I guess this is the ideology of those who would outsource their personal safety.

Top Federal Archivist: IRS Violated Law

Via the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service did not follow the law when it failed to report the loss of records belonging to a senior IRS executive, the nation’s top archivist told Congress Tuesday.

“Any agency is required to notify us when they realize they have a problem,” David Ferriero, archivist of the U.S. during a House Oversight and Government Reform committee hearing.

In June 2011, former IRS executive Lois Lerner’s computer crashed, resulting in the loss of records that are sought in investigations into the agency targeting conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. At the time, the agency tried to recover the records, but without success.

Republicans have questioned the timing of the hard drive crash, suggesting key records sought in the investigation have conveniently gone missing.

In a rare evening hearing before the same committee Monday, IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said that he has seen no evidence anyone committed a crime when the agency lost emails that might shed light on the targeting of tea party and other political groups before the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Pressed by a congressman, Tuesday, Ferriero would not state that the IRS broke the law. He would only say that the agency didn’t “follow” the law.

Flashback: Hillary Clinton Jokes About Defending Child Rapist

Via the Washington Free Beacon:

Newly discovered audio recordings of Hillary Clinton from the early 1980s include the former first lady’s frank and detailed assessment of the most significant criminal case of her legal career: defending a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl.

In 1975, the same year she married Bill, Hillary Clinton agreed to serve as the court-appointed attorney for Thomas Alfred Taylor, a 41-year-old accused of raping the child after luring her into a car.

The recordings, which date from 1983-1987 and have never before been reported, include Clinton’s suggestion that she knew Taylor was guilty at the time. She says she used a legal technicality to plead her client, who faced 30 years to life in prison, down to a lesser charge. The recording and transcript, along with court documents pertaining to the case, are embedded below.

The full story of the Taylor defense calls into question Clinton’s narrative of her early years as a devoted women and children’s advocate in Arkansas—a narrative the 2016 presidential frontrunner continues to promote on her current book tour.

Her comments on the rape trial are part of more than five hours of unpublished interviews conducted by Arkansas reporter Roy Reed with then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton and his wife in the mid-1980s.

The interviews, archived at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, were intended for an Esquire magazine profile that was never published, and offer a rare personal glimpse of the couple during a pivotal moment in their political careers.

Obama Admin. Threatens to Prosecute Border Patrol Agents Who Talk with Reporters Regarding Illegal Alien Surge

Via The Houston Chronicle:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The surge in immigrant children caught crossing the southern border in Texas that has dominated headlines and risks becoming a political crisis for President Barack Obama and Congress includes a new threat facing Border Patrol agents: reporters.

An assistant chief patrol agent, Eligio “Lee” Pena, warned more than 3,000 Border Patrol agents that journalists looking for information about what Obama has described as a humanitarian crisis are likely to ask for information and “may try to disguise themselves.” The email, obtained by The Associated Press, said agents should not speak to reporters, on or off duty, without advanced permission and warned that anyone who does could be charged with a crime or disciplined administratively.

Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowske told the AP on Friday he was not aware of Pena’s email warnings but said generally, “I am not a fan of telling people not to talk.” Kerlikowske, who has pledged greater transparency since taking over the agency earlier this year, did not formally disavow the directive but added that Border Patrol agents should be focused on their jobs while on duty.

Pena’s email was issued as national news organizations descended on the border to cover the immigration surge, especially children crossing the border alone from Central America. The problem has overwhelmed the Border Patrol. More than 47,000 children traveling alone have been found at the border since the start of the budget year in October.

Pena did not describe what sorts of disguises could be employed by reporters.

The issue has fueled the political debate in Washington about U.S. immigration policies, which contributed to this week’s stunning election defeat of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. Cantor’s opponent had said the Republican leader supported “amnesty” for immigrants in the U.S. illegally, and said the surprise election outcome effectively dooms any prospects for legal changes to American immigration laws. Obama has disputed this and urged Congress to act this summer.

Agents in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley have made more than 173,000 arrests so far this budget year. Like the child border crossers, most of the immigrants trying to cross illegally are from Central America. The crush of children traveling alone and would-be immigrants traveling as families has prompted the Homeland Security Department to move both children and families to other Border Patrol sectors for processing. The children are later handed off to the Health and Human Services Department, where officials typically try to reunite them with parents or other relatives already in the United States. DHS has released an unspecified number of families with notices to appear at Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices near their final destinations within the United States.

The Obama administration has declined to say how many people have been released and how many have reported as ordered. Kerlikowske said Friday he did not know those figures.

The latest instruction to border agents in South Texas is not the first time the Border Patrol has directed officials not to speak with reporters.

Last year, the then-head of the Border Patrols’ Southwest border media division told public affairs officials that the agency would “no longer provide interviews, ride alongs, visits, etc., about the border, the state of the border and what have you.” In his Feb. 1, 2013, email, Bill Brooks advised that border officials should tell reporters that “you will have to see what you can do to get back to them” and then notify him.

The most recent information lockdown has made the local representatives of the Border Patrol agents’ union the agency’s de facto spokesmen on conditions inside overcrowded stations and the logistical challenges of processing so many immigrants.

Jihadist Leading Iraqi Coup was Released from Gitmo in 2009 by Obama Admin.

Via The Telegraph:

he FBI “most wanted” mugshot shows a tough, swarthy figure, his hair in a jailbird crew-cut. The $10 million price on his head, meanwhile, suggests that whoever released him from US custody four years ago may now be regretting it.

Taken during his years as a detainee at the US-run Camp Bucca in southern Iraq, this is one of the few known photographs of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the new leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and Syria, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS). But while he may lack the photogenic qualities of his hero, Osama bin Laden, he is fast becoming the new poster-boy for the global jihadist movement.

Well-organised and utterly ruthless, the ex-preacher is the driving force behind al-Qaeda’s resurgence throughout Syria and Iraq, putting it at the forefront of the war to topple President Bashar al-Assad and starting a fresh campaign of mayhem against the Western-backed government in Baghdad.

This week, his forces have achieved their biggest coup in Iraq to date, seizing control of government buildings in Mosul, the country’s third biggest city, and marching further south to come within striking distance of the capital, Baghdad. Coming on top of similar operations in January that planted the black jihadi flag in the towns of Fallujah and Ramadi, it gives al-Qaeda control of large swathes of the north and west of the country, and poses the biggest security crisis since the US pull-out two years ago.

IRS Claims to Have “Lost” 2 Years of Lois Lerner’s Emails

Via Townhall:

According to the House Ways and Means Committee, the IRS has “lost” two years of emails belonging to former head of tax exempt organizations Lois Lerner. The IRS doesn’t have a record of her emails to outside groups or government agencies from January 2009 through April 2011, conveniently encompassing some of the same time when tea party groups were being targeted for extra scrutiny and possible criminal prosecution. The IRS says the loss of emails is due to a “computer crash” and claims emails from or to Lerner from the White House, Democratic members of Congress, the Treasury Department, FEC and Department of Justice cannot be located. They do however have emails belonging to Lerner that she sent to other IRS employees.
