A security source tells i24news Friday the Israeli army has foiled a massive terrorist attack, planned to take place on the Jewish new year, celebrated in the month of September.
According to the report, thousands of terrorist were meant to cross over to Israel from Gaza through the tunnels and kill and kidnap as many Israelis as they could. The source added that the army learned about the huge planned attack during the interrogations of Hamas prisoners, captured during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly said during Thursday’s cabinet meeting that the army has succeeded in foiling an attack which could have caused a number of fatalities even higher than the 2,222 fatalities Israel suffered during 1973 Yom Kippur War
The fighting in Gaza continues despite the international pressure for a ceasefire. At this point in time the Israeli army (IDF) and the government are in complete agreement that the ground operation should go on until Hamas’ tunnels are destroyed. Israel now is waiting for Monday, when the UN Security Council is scheduled to convene. “It would be hard to ignore any decision of the Security Council,” an Israeli source said Wednesday. “But despite its importance, we need more time, maybe a few more days, to hit Hamas,” he added. Israel’s security cabinet is due to convene later on Friday for a military update on Gaza.
Netanyahu on Thursday told cabinet ministers that Israel is “moving forward with the operation in Gaza with full power, in the air and on the ground.” The leader further added that Israeli Defense Forces has “deeply and significantly hurt the Gaza terror infrastructure,” including the tunnels leading into Israeli territory.
Overnight, the army has targeted approximately 90 terror activity sites in Gaza. Among them were concealed rocket launchers and surveillance posts. In the early morning hours, IDF soldiers detained two militants who were identified emerging from an access shaft of a tunnel used for terror.
In a separate incident, soldiers identified a suicide bomber wearing an explosive belt in the southern Gaza Strip. The soldiers fired at him. Subsequently, the force located two tunnel access shafts adjacent to the scene. Also on Friday, militants fired anti-tank missiles at IDF soldiers from within the Al-Wafa hospital compound, injuring four soldiers, one of them severely. 120 wounded soldiers are currently in hospitals across Israel.
Since the beginning of the ground phase of Operation Protective Edge, 843 rockets were launched from Gaza towards Israel. 658 of those rockets struck Israeli territory, while an additional 166 were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system. Since midnight, 8 rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, one was intercepted, and seven hit Israeli territory. Over 65,000 reserve forces have been drafted by the IDF.
Israeli soldiers have unearthed 63 shafts, 31 tunnels used for terror, 11 of which were subsequently destroyed by the forces. According to the army’s latest data, Israel struck 3,540 terror targets since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge on July 8.
The Palestinians report that more than 800 people were killed since the beginning of the operation.
